Cephalic biomechanics underpins the evolutionary success of trilobites

چکیده
Arthropods (i.e. insects, spiders, crustaceans, myriapods and others), are the most successful Phanerozoic animals. The group is characterized by possession of a segmented body, jointed limbs hard cuticle that episodically moulted. One highly but now extinct arthropods trilobites. Trilobites underwent episodic moulting (ecdysis), trilobites possess facial sutures, lines weakness in cephalon, via which exuviae shed animal emerges. However, zones appear to represent structural trade-off or constraint, particularly during burrowing; sacrificing consolidated head region useful burrowing for ability moult. Here we reconcile this using biomechanical modelling demonstrate sutures exist regions low stress application loads. Furthermore, structure cephalon enable sutured withstand greater stresses than their non-suture counterparts. We suggest loads enabled successfully invade bioturbated more sediments Cambrian Sediment Revolution, thus facilitating diversification Ordovician contributing evolutionary success iconic arthropod group.

Strong IT effort underpins MOE/MAR success.
During the MOE/MAR implementation, the University Health Network's IT department faced a range of issues as it attempted to take advantage of recent technological advances and satisfy users within budget constraints. The challenges of doing so in this large, academic hospital organization are identified, drawing on both successful and less successful design and implementation efforts.

Cranial biomechanics underpins high sauropod diversity in resource-poor environments
High megaherbivore species richness is documented in both fossil and contemporary ecosystems despite their high individual energy requirements. An extreme example of this is the Late Jurassic Morrison Formation, which was dominated by sauropod dinosaurs, the largest known terrestrial vertebrates. High sauropod diversity within the resource-limited Morrison is paradoxical, but might be explicabl...
متن کاملThe evolutionary success of sex
Modern human society is obsessed with sex, but even a cursory glance at a natural history documentary should convince anyone that this obsession is not limited to humans. Sex is everywhere in the living world, and its consequences for almost every aspect of life, from morphology to behaviour, are profound. Given the ubiquity of sex, it is easy to forget that it is not necessary for reproduction...

Avery’s purification of transforming principle and Kornberg’s purification of the first DNA polymerase, the experiments I have described were of a new type where what might be called the chemical behaviour of genetic material was being analysed without the benefit of purification. And this has become the new style in biology, inaugurated in the late 1950s by Taylor, Meselson and Stahl. It was, ...
